Fostering

Foster Homes
Unlike most other animal groups, we try to place dogs waiting for re-homing in "foster homes". These are people who are prepared to look after a dog in their own home for as long as it takes us to find a permanent home. This could be a matter of days, weeks or even a few months but it gives us a chance to reassess the needs of the particular animal e.g. does he/she need a home with another dog, older children, cats, etc. It also provides an opportunity to check the health of the animal, vaccinations, neutering etc. These wonderful "foster homes" give the dog love, time and exercise etc. freely BUT SPR pays for out-of-pocket expenses such as petrol and all the food and veterinary bills.

The requirements necessary for "fostering" are given below:

We are always in need of such wonderful people and it often suits their lifestyles, i.e. that cannot own their own dog because of financial and/or personal commitments (holidays etc.) We would be happy to meet you in your home to give further information and ask you to sign a form indemnifying SPR from any damage that may be caused to the foster home - in reality very few occasions has damage been done.

  1. Some experience of taking care of a dog is needed.
  2. Someone at home most of the day as dogs may be insecure if they have lost their homes.
  3. A secure garden.
  4. Have no very young children who may not understand that insecure dogs need their own space and time to adapt.
  5. Most of all you need a love of dogs and patience with their behaviour when it isn't quite up to scratch. They occasionally need help with house training and learning not to chew etc! Before we take a dog into our care, he/she is assessed and we do not take in fighters or biters.
